Description
Lamps supported by distinct legs were popular during the mid-century throughout Europe, Italy being no exception. Horseshoe models, from the Rispal-made Praying Mantis to Hans Bergström’s model for Ateljé Lyktan, are exceptional pieces in European design history.
This rare floor lamp has an understated poetic beauty. It is balancing functionality with a sculptural, artistic appearance that could easily qualify as art. The design is essentially organic, defined by the curved walnut stand with a small hook at the end to hold the lampshade. Both in terms of aesthetics and functionality, this floor lamp is exceptional. The stand is held by the unique horseshoe-shaped base. Perhaps the most creative detail is the way in which the electric cord is incorporated into the design, running down embedded into the wood. The cord is secured in its place by small metal heads, and the switch on the body is adorned by a flower-shaped brass frame showing how much attention was paid to the smallest detail. The upholstered lampshade hangs freely, making this floor lamp the perfect source of intimate mood lighting. This lamp has many qualities that make it an ideal accent lamp, serving both a functional and a purely aesthetic role.
Guided by the many Italian designers worked in the organic style including Gio Ponti, Ico Parisi, and Max Ingrand. Roberto Pamio and Renato Toso designed functional yet modern fixtures that were intended to brighten up and stand out in all spaces. Pamio and Toso were close collaborators and created completely new forms following developments in technology.
