Description
Vico Magistretti was among the first external collaborators of the young company Artemide, founded in 1959 originally for the production of lamps only, to which furniture was later added. Since 1961, Magistretti has been proposing lamps, still initially linked to handcrafted production, characterised by a uniformity in the choice of name, a classical evocation of the Greek alphabet, which is also reflected in the formal configuration. Lambda of 1961, like Omicron with which it shares the design of the support and the use of materials, is an elegant wall lamp composed of two opaline crystal valves (the production of pressed glass was entrusted, externally to the company, to Fidenza Vetreria which, at the time, supplied all Artemide's pressed glass) joined by the use of a metal support, screwed at two points, which fixes the diffusers by anchoring them at the top to the wall support. The relief edging of the two diffusers as well as the horizontal engraving of the crystal (reminiscent of the typical frosted glass of the 1930s-40s) play in counterpoint with the verticality of the metal support sheet, giving the object a strong expressive value.
