Description
LOUIS PHILIPPE ARCHED TOP GILTWOOD PIER MIRROR
France, circa 1870s
73" H x 2" D x 32 1/4" W
ref. 601EIK14Z
A tall Louis Philippe period pier mirror with arched crest and restrained giltwood frame. The molding is defined by a continuous twisted rope border set within a simple outer surround. The upper arch transitions cleanly into straight sides, maintaining the strong vertical emphasis characteristic of the form.
The original mirror plate is decorated with an acid-etched and frosted floral border. Delicately engraved scrolling foliage and rosette motifs articulate the perimeter, framing a clear central reflective field. The frosted ground provides subtle contrast against the polished mirror surface without overwhelming the composition.
The gilding presents in a warm tone and a lovely aged patina, the minor surface variation and blemish commensurate with age and overall lovely.
Condition: Original backboards, apparently original glass (backing not removed to confirm), fine early gilding. Minor loss, chipping, discoloration and blemish throughout the gilding consistent with age. Light scuffs / scratches to the mirror plate. Ready to place.
Note, this mirror is heavy; the hardware should be inspected by a professional and be installed professionally - it retains the wire that mounted it in the estate we purchased it from, but we do not make any guarantees about the suitability of that wire or mount for installation in your home. -
