Mid-century Italian large rectangular wall mirror with a sculptural wood frame and beveled mirror glass, Italy, 1950s.

The mirror is distinguished by its tall, subtly shaped rectangular form, with gently tapering sides, rounded corners and a softly bowed upper edge. The dark reddish-brown wood frame is narrow when viewed from the front but has greater depth along the sides, giving the mirror a substantial yet restrained profile. A wide beveled border follows the contour of the mirror plate and adds definition without distracting from the simplicity of the form.

The distinctive curved rectangular silhouette is in the style of Gio Ponti, whose work helped establish this type of refined, softly geometric mirror form in postwar Italian design. The understated wood frame and generous proportions make the mirror particularly suitable for midcentury modern, contemporary, Italian modernist and more traditional interiors.

The reverse retains its period partial wood backing and two metal hanging fixtures.
