Description
Barovier & Toso rare pair of Murano leaf sconces with gold leaf inclusions, Murano, Italy, 1950s.
Each sculptural leaf-form Murano glass diffuser with gold-leaf inclusions is formed from a substantial hand-worked glass leaf with a pronounced central stem and deeply modeled veining. The translucent glass is enriched throughout with fine gold leaf, which becomes incorporated into the molten glass during production and creates an irregular, shimmering surface rather than a uniform gilded effect.
The glass also displays Barovier & Toso’s distinctive rugiadoso technique, a textured Murano glass treatment that creates a fine, frost-like surface. This subtle texture softens and diffuses the light while emphasizing the sculptural veining of the leaf. Combined with the gold-leaf inclusions, it gives the glass considerable depth and a warm luminous quality when illuminated.
Each leaf is supported by a ribbed brass collar and circular brass wall plate, with the lower glass stem extending below the mount. The combination of richly worked Murano glass, gold inclusions and polished brass gives the pair a refined and highly decorative presence. A rare and beautifully executed pair demonstrating Barovier & Toso’s sophisticated use of rugiadoso glass, gold leaf and sculptural organic form.
Both sconces retain their original Barovier & Toso, Murano Venezia labels. -
