Description
Afra & Tobia Scarpa 'Soriana' Sofa for Cassina, Italy, 1969
The revolutionary and unique 'Soriana' three-seat sofa was designed by the Italian designer duo, Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1969 for Cassina. The iconic design is a rare and coveted piece of Italian collectible design. The form features a plush, voluminous form, cinched by a sleek chrome frame, creating a unique visual tension. This sofa was manufactured by Cassina as part of the eponymous line that reached the coveted ‘iconic’ title soon after its launch. The award-winning design features three front metal clamps by which all soft curves and upholstery are held together, a particularly original detail that creates a sense of barely contained softness. The 'Soriana' collection was meant to express beauty and comfort by using a whole bundle of fabric cinched together by chrome-plated steel clamps. The defining upholstered body features tufted buttons on the body, which visually sections the sofa, while also adding depth to accentuate the softness. Afra and Tobia Scarpa’s collaboration with Italian manufacturer Cassina reached its peak with this line. Established in 1927, Cassina launched industrial design in Italy in the 1950's, with a mindset focused on research and innovation, combining technology and long-standing European artisanal craftsmanship. The interesting pairing of the metal clamps with the luxurious rich espresso colored velvet fabric creates a dramatic sculptural form. This piece has been newly re-upholstered in an Italian espresso colored velvet and restored in our professional studio.
