Description
This is a beautiful 3rd-generation Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, presented in richly figured Brazilian rosewood and new black leather—an increasingly rare combination, and an exceptional survivor. Overall, this example shows exactly the kind of gentle, respectful life we love to see: honest, even patina, no structural damage, and shells that remain crisp, lustrous, and deeply expressive.
The rosewood veneers are particularly special on this chair. Highly figured and dramatically book-matched, the grain displays a striking interplay of light and dark—warm auburns, deep chocolates, and inky streaks that shift beautifully as the light moves across the surface. This natural chatoyancy is one of the defining qualities of Brazilian rosewood, and it is showcased here to remarkable effect. The moss green leather complements the wood perfectly, grounding the chair while allowing the shells to remain the visual star.
Why This Example Matters
Brazilian rosewood shells with dramatic, book-matched grain
Rectangular cushion clips
Factory-correct foam and leather upholstery for the period
Original shock mounts present and fully functional
These transitional details make early 3rd-generation chairs especially desirable, combining material richness with long-term comfort and durability.
Condition
Overall: Excellent vintage condition; structurally sound, fully functional, and extremely comfortable. New Leather.
Leather: New cushions upholstered in full classic Black leather. We are happy to reupholster this chair in Moss Green leather or Oxblood or another color at no additional cost—please inquire.
Shells: Brazilian rosewood presents with exceptional depth and figure. Shells have been restored.
Hardware & Base: Shock mounts are solid and secure; swivel mechanism operates smoothly.
Labels: Chair and ottoman retain original Herman Miller labels, confirming authenticity.
Design Notes
The Eames Lounge Chair remains the benchmark of American Mid-Century design—comfort engineered like a machine, finished like fine cabinetry. This early 3rd-generation example reads warm, architectural, and deeply residential. The rosewood’s unusual grain pattern—alive with contrast and movement—creates a dynamic surface that rewards close inspection, while the moss green leather softens the silhouette and invites everyday use.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire an exceptionally well-preserved, 3rd-generation Eames Lounge Chair with outstanding wood selection and collector-grade details—an heirloom piece that continues to grow more elusive each year.
