Description
This rare side table or stool, designed by Eero Aarnio and produced by ASKO in Finland, reflects a lesser-known yet highly distinctive facet of the designer’s output—his work with natural materials and handcraft traditions. Crafted entirely from natural rattan, the piece demonstrates a sculptural simplicity that aligns with Aarnio’s broader design language, while also revealing his versatility beyond the plastic and fiberglass forms for which he is best known.
The construction is defined by a tightly coiled, rhythmic pattern that forms a compact cylindrical shape with slightly rounded edges. The overall silhouette is minimal yet tactile, allowing the natural texture and color of the rattan to take center stage. The honey-toned finish brings warmth and a soft, organic quality, underscoring the material’s visual and structural lightness. Despite its delicate appearance, the piece is remarkably durable, suitable for use as a stool, side table, or decorative accent.
The structure remains in excellent vintage condition, with a consistent surface patina that testifies to its age while preserving the integrity of the woven material. There are no breaks or significant wear in the rattan, which remains tightly bound and well-finished, reflecting the high production standards of ASKO during the mid-20th century.
Eero Aarnio (b. 1932) is one of Finland’s most influential designers, internationally recognized for his radical contributions to postwar design. While Aarnio is most closely associated with futuristic forms and synthetic materials, this piece reveals his interest in exploring traditional craftsmanship through a modern lens. By applying his sculptural instincts to rattan, Aarnio demonstrates how organic form and natural material can achieve the same expressive power as his more technologically driven works.
As a rare example from Aarnio’s body of work in rattan, this side table or stool holds both aesthetic and historical significance. It illustrates the designer’s range and his capacity to merge Finnish craft heritage with modernist sensibilities, resulting in a piece that is as functional as it is quietly iconic.
