Description
A poised study in balance and movement, this pair of armchairs by Giuseppe Scapinelli captures the designer’s unmistakable ability to give weightless expression to solid wood. Executed in richly figured caviúna, the frames reveal a deep, warm tonality—subtle reddish-brown undertones layered with linear grain variation—finished in a refined satin that allows the natural veining to read with clarity and depth, never gloss. The material itself is integral: dense, stable, and prized in mid-century Brazilian production, caviúna offers both structural integrity and a visual richness that elevates the sculptural silhouette.
Scapinelli’s line work is where the chairs truly distinguish themselves. The arms extend in a continuous, fluid gesture—tapered, slightly lifted, and resolved with a soft forward pitch—creating a sense of levity that belies the solidity of the construction. The stance is dynamic yet controlled: rear legs splay gently outward, while the front legs anchor the composition with a subtle inward tension. This interplay produces an architectural lightness, a hallmark of Scapinelli’s most celebrated designs from the 1950s.
The upholstery, rendered in a muted dusty teal velvet, introduces a quiet yet sophisticated counterpoint to the warmth of the wood. Its desaturated blue-green tone—with a soft gray cast—absorbs light rather than reflecting it, lending the chairs a calm, atmospheric presence. The dense, matte velvet enhances tactility while reinforcing the lounge-oriented comfort. The seat and backrest are generously proportioned yet disciplined—no excess, no softness without structure—maintaining the designer’s commitment to clarity of form.
Iconic within the canon of Brazilian modernism, these armchairs exemplify Scapinelli’s synthesis of European modernist principles with a distinctly Brazilian sensibility—organic, expressive, and materially grounded. The result is a pair that reads equally as functional seating and as sculptural objects, each line considered, each transition resolved with precision.
A collector-grade example of mid-century Brazilian design, where craftsmanship, proportion, and material converge with rare fluency.
