Description
A superb quality late 19th century walnut double chair back sofa / settee after a George II design of Giles Grendey’s .
English Circa 1880.
A wonderful sofa having scroll back supports with carved crestings above vase shaped splats with segmented figured walnut veneers and carved borders. The bow front slip-in stuffed seat above a veneered seat rail and gadroon moulded apron, the eagle headed carved arms with moulded and ornate carved supports on a trellis ground, the scale and scroll carved cabriole legs with shell carved knees and ending in claw and ball feet.
This elegant walnut twin chair back settee sofa is an exceptional example with fine original colour and patina having close appearance of a period example, recently reupholstered in a neutral velvet material.
A period example of this sofa was sold by Christies New York 7th June 2013 Lot 345 achieving $75,000.
