Oak Bench with Mortise and Tenon Joinery, Europe ca 1950s

$ 3,795
  • Description
    In the past year, seating benches have become a popular choice in home décor. Of course, these benches’ primary purpose is to provide a convenient and comfortable place to sit. However, a bench, such as this beautiful wooden model, can also be used as an interior decorative element.

    All major interior design companies have released their own bench models, but it is hard to live up to the wooden pieces created in the mid-century. This oak bench is dominated by two elements: its material and the master joinery techniques. Without a doubt, the mortise and tenon joint is used more than any other for woodwork and furniture. For a good reason. This type of joinery, often seen in mid-century woodworking, is a sturdy technique that is sure to last. As seen on the oak stretcher of this bench connecting the legs, the protruding tenon, cut at the end of one piece, fits into a corresponding recess, called a mortise, in the other. This joint is a staple in the construction of this bench, and also defines is aesthetically. Furthermore, cutting a clean and tight mortise and tenon by hand is recognized as a sign of skill even among cabinetmakers. The patinated oak highlights the joinery and the rounded edges of the design. The screws used to reinforce stability are left visible, adding to the rustic, mid-century look.

    This bench is defined by its long horizontal lines, its joinery, and its material. It can be incorporated into any space thanks to its classic look, not to mention its functionality. Benches in general can be placed in any space, including the living room, bedroom, hallway or even outside. Craftsmanship and quality materials are among the few things that will never go out of style, therefore this oak bench could be an addition of a lifetime to any space.
