Sergio Rodrigues “Mischievous” Chair and Ottoman, Brazil

Description
This sculptural Sergio Rodrigues Mischievous Chair and Ottoman is the very epitome of Brazilian modern design—bold, sensual, and unapologetically grounded in the natural beauty of Brazilian hardwoods. Crafted from solid rosewood, the frame showcases the richness and density that made Brazilian furniture of this era so revered worldwide.
Sergio Rodrigues is widely credited with inventing the Brazilian modern language: a powerful hardwood frame paired with thick leather slings, exposed pegs, and strap construction, designed to suspend the sitter as if floating. Rather than conforming to European restraint, Rodrigues embraced comfort, weight, and warmth—creating what feels like a cloud of leather cradled by wood.
The Mischievous Chair embodies this philosophy perfectly. The generous leather cushions rest within a system of tensioned straps and dowels, allowing the chair to move subtly with the body while remaining deeply supportive. The ottoman mirrors this construction, completing the experience of relaxed, grounded luxury.
More than seating, this is a manifesto of Brazilian design:
Solid rosewood frame with expressive joinery
Leather sling-and-strap construction pioneered by Rodrigues
A celebration of comfort, craftsmanship, and material honesty
Equal parts sculpture and sanctuary, this chair is not merely furniture—it is Brazilian modernism at its most confident and charismatic, and a cornerstone piece for any serious collector or design-forward interior.
