Six Philadelphia Klismos Dining Chairs
-
Description
Six gadroon crested padauk Klismos sabre-legged dining chairs, with hand-stitched needlepoint slip seats in mint condition. Attributed to Antoine Gabriel Quervelle, French trained Philadelphian furniture maker. Six of a very large set of side chairs, divided by heirs into smaller sets of six. Narrative provenance confirmed by Roman numeral inscription. The slip-seats conform to the curvature of the slanted Klismos form seat rails. The seat height of 18 inches is appropriate for use at a period table of the early 19th century, when these chairs were made.
