Description
A Swedish Gustavian period painted wood sofa circa 1780 with carved crest, tall arms with finials, carved apron and cylindrical fluted legs. Step into the elegance of the Swedish Gustavian period with this exquisite painted wood sofa from the late 18th century. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, this visually stunning piece embodies the timeless charm of Gustavian design.
The sofa features a carved crest that takes center stage, showcasing a ribbon-tied bushel of wheat. Falling lines on each side merge seamlessly with the tall arms, which are adorned with petite finials, adding a touch of refinement to the overall composition.
The seat of the sofa is covered with a used fabric in fair condition, offering both comfort and vintage appeal. Petite cushions on the sides enhance the seating experience, providing additional support and style.
The carved apron is adorned with a frieze of foliage surrounded by delicate beads. Fluted triglyphs interrupt the frieze, adding a sophisticated touch. The sofa rests on cylindrical fluted legs, tapering elegantly towards the bottom. These legs, a hallmark of Gustavian style, contribute to the piece's graceful aesthetic.
Painted in a soft color, reminiscent of the Scandinavian taste, this sofa exhibits a lovely distressed finish, adding character and charm. The sides of the sofa are simply carved with raised panels, further accentuating its visual appeal.
While the back of the sofa lacks decorative elements, it maintains a clean and understated design, ensuring that the focus remains on the exquisite detailing showcased on the front.
This Swedish Gustavian period painted wood sofa is a remarkable example of 18th-century craftsmanship and design. Its carved crest, tall arms, carved apron, and cylindrical fluted legs are testaments to the enduring beauty of Gustavian style. Whether placed in a living room, library, or foyer, this sofa will elevate the ambiance of any interior space. -
