19th Century Art Nouveau Thonet Chairs by J. Hoffmann, 1st edition - CZ ca. 1906

Very rare pair of the first edition(!) Art Nouveau chairs Mod. 643 from the early 20th century, produced by Thonet in Bohemia around 1906. Designed by none other than the world famous Austrian architect and founder of the "Wiener Werkstaette" Josef Hoffmann, this exceptional pair of early Art Nouveau Thonet chairs is from the absolute rare first edition and comes in great original condition. A clear indication for the first edition is the design of the five rods in the backrest: the backside shows a semicircular shaped form, whereby the front has a grounded, straight surface (see pictures #13 & 14). Same models can be found on the market but these are almost all re-editions from the 1930/40s. Artfully crafted out of bentwood (=beech wood formed under hot steam and pressure), these chairs have been trimmed to the well known dark mahogany look. The leather seating surface shows signs of use but still confer them a very charming appearance. Both pieces are marked with the famous Thonet paper sign at the bottom.
