Description
Launched in 1972, the DS-600 Non-Stop is one of the most important modular seating designs of the twentieth century. Created by Ueli Berger, Eleonore Peduzzi-Riva, Heinz Ulrich, and the De Sede development team, it rethought the sofa as a flexible architectural system rather than a fixed object. Each element is built around an L-shaped hard foam core with a down-lined, leather-covered cushion, and connected through a plug-in hinge system with a hide and zipper construction. The result is a sofa that can bend, curve, extend, and reconfigure almost endlessly.
What looks playful now was, in fact, a serious technical achievement. The idea of a convex and concave sofa was radical, but turning it into something truly producible took extensive development. De Sede and the designers spent roughly a year refining prototypes before arriving at the system that would become the DS-600: durable, adaptable, and structurally unlike anything else on the market at the time.
This example consists of 24 elements and has been reupholstered by our in-house team in Deep Espresso Brown leather, carried out with exceptional care and respect for the original design. The leather is rich, dark, and classic — a tone that suits the sculptural rhythm of the piece especially well. The result is a rare balance: an iconic vintage form with the presence and finish of something newly made.
The DS-600 became known not only for its design significance, but also for its cultural life. Nicknamed the Tatzelwurmor “dragon,” it appeared in major interiors around the world, from private residences to Studio 54, and in well-known film settings. At the far end of its mythology, the longest known DS-600 was commissioned in a rainbow-colored version of 406 elements for a ruling family’s palace.
More than fifty years after its launch, the DS-600 remains one of De Sede’s most recognizable and ambitious designs — part furniture, part system, part sculpture. In a 24-element version, it has real scale and authority while still retaining the fluidity that made the model famous. -
