Danish Modern Dining Set in Fabric, Rosewood & Steel by Verner Panton, 1958

This very rare dining set, composed of five Cone chairs and a matching table, was designed in 1958 by Verner Panton and manufactured by Gebrüder Nehl in Germany. It stands as a landmark ensemble within the evolution of postwar modernist design, notable for its radical form language and architectural presence. First exhibited at the “Købestævnet” trade fair in Fredericia in 1959, this set marks one of Panton’s earliest forays into sculptural, futuristic furniture, laying the groundwork for his later experiments in color, form, and material.

The Cone chairs are constructed around a molded internal shell that forms a sharply tapered cone, supported by a star-shaped chromed steel base with swivel functionality. Each chair maintains its original purple-blue upholstery—an electrifying choice that amplifies Panton’s flair for bold color and geometry. The chairs’ silhouettes are simultaneously angular and inviting, with the wide circular seat narrowing to a precise base, making them appear both sculptural and dynamic. Despite their avant-garde profile, the chairs are ergonomically shaped, offering comfort through angled backrests and integrated seat padding.

The table complements the chairs with a circular rosewood top featuring a richly figured grain and warm reddish-brown hue. It rests on a central pedestal base, designed to harmonize visually with the steel elements of the chairs while allowing for maximum legroom. The scale of the tabletop—measuring just over a meter in diameter—makes it ideal for intimate gatherings and focused visual impact.

Condition-wise, the set is well-preserved. The original fabric upholstery is in good vintage condition, with light signs of wear consistent with age and careful use. The color remains vibrant, and the structural integrity of the upholstery is intact. The steel bases are clean and free from corrosion, retaining their polished appearance. The rosewood tabletop shows a gentle patina and minor surface marks, which add to the authenticity and richness of its vintage finish.

Verner Panton (1926–1998) was one of Denmark’s most influential 20th-century designers, celebrated for his radical reinterpretation of form, space, and color. The Cone chair marked a decisive break from traditional furniture typologies and foreshadowed Panton’s later work with synthetic materials and immersive environments.
