Description
An unusual Warren McArthur lounge chair, a low version of Style No. 1132ASU, exemplifies the innovative engineering and modernist elegance that defined McArthur’s aluminum furniture designs of the 1930s and early 1940s.
Distinguished by its low frame variant, this model showcases McArthur’s signature anodized aluminum tubing, expertly fitted with precision joints and flush-mounted hardware — hallmarks of his refined industrial aesthetic.
The 1132ASU designation identifies this as a chair Style No. 1132 ((A)rmchair, (S)pring Seat, (U)pholstered arms) — a luxury configuration that combines ergonomic comfort with structural ingenuity. The concealed spring-cushion system within the seat frame provides a gentle, resilient give, enhancing the lounge experience while maintaining the chair’s crisp architectural geometry.
Upholstered in a faux British sherling fabric the chair’s soft surfaces balance beautifully against the cool precision of the aluminum frame.
Warren McArthur’s furniture embodied the optimism and technical sophistication of early modern American design — lightweight, modular, and forward-looking, yet engineered for strength and longevity. Produced at McArthur’s Rome, New York factory around 1936, this lounge height frame version is rare and believed to have been manufactured in limited quantities for select institutional or custom commissions.
I have included a photo of a standard McArthur Model 1132 ASU and the information page from the 1936 Warren McArthur Corporation catalog.
The chair is in very good condition. -
