Description
The mid-20th century saw brilliant European designers working to create furniture that explored truly modern shapes and innovative techniques, while still maintaining the highest level of quality. Designers experimented with new materials and construction methods, resulting in a harmonious blend of minimalism, organic shapes, and understated elegance. This sculptural wingback armchair is a prime example of European designers' emphasis on beauty and simplicity.
Cabinetmaker armchairs may seem similar at first sight - however, each model’s individuality becomes evident upon closer inspection. With a clear preoccupation with geometry, this chair’s outstanding architectural frame speaks of the mastery of the designer and of the producer. The rich green fabric complements the look by adding a pop of colour and highlighting the structure of the armchair. A conspicuous feature of this model is the design of the back and the armrests: the back has an enveloping shape that hugs the sitter, while the armrests have a slightly outward curving shape that opens up the design, creating a welcoming look. The fully-upholstered frame rests on short dark wood legs, which are tapered and slightly splayed. From every single angle, this armchair offers a stunning silhouette and rich texture. It is truly timeless evidence of the mastery and artistry of the European cabinetmakers who defined mid-20th century modern seating.
The synthesis that this chair has achieved between form and function is outstanding: aesthetics and utility coming together in a uniquely mid-century manner. Above all, European designers believed that design could certainly be used to improve people's lives. This sentiment can be traced in the exquisite materials, the impeccable craftsmanship, and in the elegantly curved and rounded edges of this chair.
