Model "A4460" Table Lamp by Hans Bergström for ASEA, Sweden 1940s

Hans Bergström was one of Sweden's foremost lighting designers of the twentieth century. Trained as both an architect and designer, he founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934 while also creating a number of highly regarded models for ASEA during the 1940s. His work is distinguished by an exceptional understanding of proportion and light, combining carefully selected materials with elegant silhouettes that bridge the decorative traditions of the 1930s and 40s and the emerging Scandinavian modernism of the post-war years.

Model “A4460” demonstrates Bergström's refined approach to composition. A broad brass shade dominates the design, its generous conical profile appearing to float effortlessly above a softly illuminated opaline glass diffuser. The glass introduces a unique element, supporting the shade while being visible from both above and from the side. The interplay between these two elements creates a layered effect, directing light while allowing a warm glow to radiate gently through the glass. Below, a slender fluted wooden stem introduces warmth and visual contrast, its vertical emphasis balancing the expansive geometry of the shade above. Brass details at the base and around the fitting unify the composition, while the restrained palette of brass, wood, and opaline glass reflects the material sophistication for which Bergström became known.

Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The table lamp has recently been rewired and reconditioned. Due to the nature and age of the materials, the lamp has some marks, scratches, and discolouration. This lamp is compatible with an E26 / E27 standard fitting. All lighting can be converted for US usage.
