Description
A striking early 20th-century Dutch Amsterdam School sideboard crafted in solid oak by Meubelfabriek L.O.V. (Labor Omnia Vincit) of Oosterbeek. This architecturally composed cabinet exemplifies the bold geometry and sculptural restraint characteristic of the Amsterdam School movement.
The case features a slightly overhanging top with raised gallery back, above a single long frieze drawer fitted with original turned wooden knobs. The drawer retains its original fitted interior with divided compartments, adding functional charm and period authenticity. Below, two paneled cupboard doors open to reveal spacious shelved storage. The cabinet rests on square-section legs, reinforcing its strong, grounded presence.
The oak displays beautifully expressive grain throughout, enhanced by a deep, fumed or ebonized finish typical of progressive Dutch design of the period. The reverse retains the original metal manufacturer’s plaque reading: “Meubelfabriek L.O.V., Oosterbeek.”
Founded in the late 19th century, L.O.V. became closely associated with forward-thinking Dutch design and the Amsterdam School aesthetic, which emphasized craftsmanship, material honesty, and architectural form. This piece embodies those principles with its confident massing, subtle detailing, and refined proportions. -
