Description
This is a Charles II-style English oak Court Cupboard with hand carving and incising, Doric columns, thumb-molded edges, and it has a central cupboard over a long drawer, over a lower shelf. The cupboard door and its canted sides are nicely carved with geometrical stylized flower forms in roundels and lozenges, flanked by beading. Its door has been rehung with 19th century hardware. The long drawer has vertical geometrical motifs centered by a stylized tulip pattern, one large dovetail per side, while the drawer bottom is made in oak planks running front to back. The drawer has its right-side hidden drawer-slide replaced. The Doric columns give it a Restoration presence, and the large shelf areas on the top, middle, and bottom provide ample room for displaying important pieces of silver, gold, ceramics, books, or sculptures. The cupboard and long drawer provide ample areas for storage. It sits on squashed ball feet. The original pegged joinery is present, and there are antique square nails evident on the paneled back boards. This remnant of former times makes a fine modern-use sideboard or as a major focal point of a room. It is heavy in weight yet light in profile, beautifully carved and proportioned, has a Pilgrim Century demeanor, a fine patina, and a bold presence. This stately court cupboard provides an elegant, comforting, warm expression in most rooms, in either traditional or modern décors. Its "short cupboard" height allows one to hang a mirror or painting on the wall above it.
