Description
A French early 19th century cherry wood Louis XV style bonnetière from the Charente Region. This French cabinet was born in the Southwestern region of Charente (think Angoulême) , famous for its traditional production of salt and cognac. Originally created in the Normandy area of France, bonnetières started to spread throughout France during the 18th century. Made to receive bonnets and ‘coiffes’ (the traditional headpieces of each region) this armoire features a single door with nicely carved recessed panel. The large cornice that tops the piece is canted on the sides, while the frieze below is adorned with a central star-inlaid motif. The side posts which are also canted, are fluted and topped with a petite dentil molding below each capital. An exquisite hardware adornes the door and lower drawer. The door opens to reveal three inner shelves. The lower drawer attracts all the attention with its intricate hardware, visually accentuating the star in a diamond inlaid motif. The ensemble is raised on short scrolled feet, connected to one another with a delicately scalloped apron. With its nice proportions and warm patina, this French early 19th century Louis XV style cabinet will be a lovely addition to any room.
