Description
A refined example of Brazilian modernist restraint, this 1950s bookshelf by Móveis Valério pairs architectural clarity with material precision. The structure is executed in solid ebonized pau marfim hardwood, its vertical supports rising with elegant taper into subtly splayed legs, each terminating in original bronze sabots. The shelves, veneered in warm-toned hardwood, introduce a measured contrast—rich yet controlled—against the depth of the darkened frame.
The composition is rhythmic and balanced: slender uprights punctuate the horizontal planes, creating a light, almost floating effect despite its solid construction. The proportions are particularly successful. At 110 cm wide x 25 cm deep x 96 cm high (43.3 x 9.8 x 37.8 in), the piece offers generous display capacity while maintaining a compact footprint—ideal for apartments, studies, or layered interiors where depth must remain disciplined. The 25 cm depth accommodates books and objects without projecting heavily into a room, making it exceptionally versatile.
Original manufacturer’s label retained.
The combination of ebonized pau marfim, warm shelving surfaces, and bronze sabots reflects the Brazilian modernist commitment to honest materials elevated through proportion and craft. Elegant, practical, and visually light, this bookcase embodies the quiet intelligence that defines mid-century design in Brazil. -
