Description
Pair of antique French ebonised wood, ormolu, bronze and marquetry cabinets
French, Late 19th Century
Height 110cm, width 89cm, depth 41cm
A remarkable example of 19th century French decorative arts, this impressive pair of Napoleon III style cabinets was made in the late 19th century. Displaying expert craftsmanship and refined classical ornamentation, these pieces are rich in historical charm and decorative appeal.
The cabinets are crowned with veined white marble tops, each elegantly framed with a finely cast gilt-bronze edging. Beneath sits a slim frieze drawer, subtly guiding the eye toward the more elaborate design elements below. Constructed from ebonised wood, the bodies are adorned using a sophisticated blend of materials and ornamental techniques that enhance their striking visual presence.
The drawer fronts are embellished with delicate brass inlay borders and feature rectangular frames encasing central gilt bronze-mounted patinated bronze plaques. These cartouches present joyful cherubic figures with musical instruments. The drawer handles themselves are beautifully shaped and enhance the refined aesthetic of the pair.
The doors are an artistic focal point. Each one features a central patinated bronze medallion surrounded by ornate gilt bronze detailing. One cabinet depicts three nymphs lifting a figure of Cupid onto an altar, while the other shows two nymphs and a satyr raising a statue of Pan, the god of the wild. These bronze reliefs are finely modelled, showcasing intricate details from delicate drapery to expressive facial features.
Surrounding each scene is a garlanded ormolu frame crowned with a flowing ribbon motif. Additional marquetry work graces the corners of the cabinet fronts, depicting floral motifs in beautifully preserved original hues - an uncommon feature, as these colours are often lost over time. The lockable doors open to reveal two shelves.
Brass inlay and ormolu embellishments continue across the cabinet fronts and sides, while the panels on either side mirror the sophistication of the front with framed ormolu medallions. -
