Swedish Late Gustavian Period 1820s Painted Buffet with Carved Reeded Doors

Sold Sold
  • Description
A Swedish late Gustavian period painted wood buffet from the early 19th century, with canted sides, two doors, reeded panels and weathered patina. Created in Sweden during the first quarter of the 19th century, this painted buffet features a rectangular top with canted sides, sitting above two doors. Each door is adorned with carved reeded panels, and opens to reveal inner shelves offering convenient storage opportunities. The side posts are canted and the sides are plain. The back is, of course, unfinished.

The buffet is painted in a soft color with good amount of distressing, typical of the Swedish taste for light palettes aiming at brightening the rooms during the long and dark winters of Scandinavia.

The Gustavian style takes its roots in the Louis XVI era. Swedish King Gustav III resided in 1771 in Paris, at the beginning stages of the Louis XVI style. There, he was inspired by French art and fashion. With that in his luggage, he had a strong desire to introduce something similar in Sweden. The country had Fine craftsmen with high quality craftsmanship, who produced a simple style with harmonious aesthetics. The Gustavian Style was born and has been in vogue ever since. It is incredibly popular, especially in England but also in France and in the USA. Price and age are of course inextricably linked, the older and rarer the higher the price!

Boasting a nicely weathered appearance, this Swedish late Gustavian period painted buffet circa 1820 will make for a charming addition to any home, placed in a kitchen, living room or dining room.
