This 19th-century French étagère is a compelling example of vernacular furniture, shaped by practical construction and individual craftsmanship rather than formal cabinetmaking traditions. Its tall open structure incorporates several generously proportioned shelves, framed by simple upright supports and crowned by a distinctive hand-cut scalloped edge. Subtle incised geometric decoration along the shelf fronts introduces a personal, decorative element to an otherwise functional piece.

The wood retains an exceptionally rich, time-worn surface, with irregularities, traces of use and variations in tone preserved throughout. Slight variations in the profiles of the shelves and carved details emphasize its handmade character, while the open construction gives the piece a strong architectural presence despite its straightforward origins. All our rustic furniture has undergone a two-cycle preventive woodworm treatment for long-term care.
