Bodil Kjaer Desk in Rosewood and Chrome, Denmark, 1960s

$ 45,483
  • Description
    Bodil Kjær approached furniture with the mind of an architect. Her designs from the late 1950s and 1960s were conceived as working tools for modern interiors, balancing strict geometry with warmth through the use of carefully selected materials. This original 1960s desk reflects that philosophy with clarity: restrained in line, generous in proportion, and centred around utility rather than decoration. The piece carries the calm authority associated with Scandinavian modernism at its most refined.

    Design
    Executed in rosewood, the desk features a broad floating top with vivid grain patterns that shift from deep auburn to near-black figuring depending on the light. The surface is uninterrupted and expansive, giving the desk an architectural presence that feels almost monolithic. Beneath the top sits a discreet drawer arrangement integrated into the apron, each fitted with circular rosewood pulls framed by brass escutcheons. Those subtle details soften the otherwise linear composition and introduce a tactile quality to the design.

    The polished chrome frame forms two open rectangular supports connected beneath the top, creating a sense of suspension and lightness despite the substantial proportions. Kjær often worked with modular principles and rational structures, drawing inspiration from contemporary office architecture and international modernist design. This desk shares affinities with the designer’s celebrated “James Bond Desk” series produced by E. Pedersen & Søn, where functionality and visual discipline exist in careful balance.

    Rosewood pieces from this period have become increasingly sought after for the depth of their timber and the precision of their cabinetmaking. Here, the contrast between the warm organic veneer and the cool chromed steel gives the desk a distinctly international character suited to both residential and professional interiors.

    Condition
    The desk is professionally restored and is in very good vintage condition with light signs of use consistent with age. The chrome base presents well with minor wear visible upon close inspection.
