Description
This coffee table by Pander & Zonen reflects the rational elegance of the Hague School combined with early Dutch Art Deco principles. Crafted in the first decades of the 20th century, it merges restrained ornament with architectural structure.
Design
The round tabletop is veneered in a sunburst pattern, drawing the eye inward with radiating grain lines that catch the light. Supporting the top, flat panels intersect to form a cross-shaped base, grounded by a lower shelf that adds both storage and symmetry. The vertical elements rest on ebonised feet, offering contrast and a sense of visual weight. There’s a considered balance here: strong lines, quiet surfaces, and purposeful use of negative space.
Founded in The Hague in 1887, Pander & Zonen was known for blending traditional craftsmanship with the progressive design ideals of the early 20th century. The metal label affixed beneath the tabletop confirms its provenance and origin in one of the Netherlands’ most respected workshops.
Condition
In good condition, with light signs of age and use. The tabletop shows minor surface scratches and some veneer wear, but retains its warmth and presence. -
