Description
SOLID GRAY-VEINED MARBLE PEDESTAL
Probably Italian, late 19th century
34 1/4" H x 14" W x 14" D
ref. 512RBG20P
A solid marble display pedestal of classical inspiration, composed in three separate sections consisting of a square top, a tapering baluster form column, and a square plinth base. The shaft rises with gentle taper and is finished with simple ring-turnings and cove moldings at both the capital and base, lending the form a very attractive austerity and simplicity in its restrained architecture. The stone presents a soft white ground with grey veining distributed throughout the surface, overall being honed and matte in texture from the years, the rubbing/discoloration lending a lovely overall patina throughout.
The pedestal is carved entirely from solid marble with no hollow sections, giving the column considerable weight and stability. The top is proportioned to support sculpture, bronzes, or decorative objects, while the clean geometry of the design allows it to integrate easily within both traditional and contemporary interiors.
The three components separate for transport and placement.
Condition: Light staining and discoloration to the marble surface, scattered minor chips, and areas of honing. Presents with a well-developed aged patina to the stone. -
