Description
A beautifully proportioned French walnut extension dining table from the Restauration period, dating to the early 19th century, circa 1800–1850. Crafted from richly figured walnut, the table reflects the refined restraint and elegant geometry characteristic of the Restauration era, when furniture design moved away from the ornamental exuberance of the Empire period toward cleaner architectural lines and harmonious proportions.
Designed for both intimate dining and grand entertaining, this impressive table expands to comfortably seats 14 guests, making it ideal for large dining rooms and designer interiors where scale and flexibility are essential.
The oval top rests upon four elegantly tapered legs terminating in brass-capped casters, providing both mobility and visual lightness. The apron allows for leg clearance of 25 inches. The graceful silhouette is enhanced by the softly rounded ends and refined apron, creating a table that feels sophisticated yet understated.
The table features a robust extension mechanism accommodating five leaves, allowing it to expand dramatically from a compact oval table to a remarkable banquet length of over 145 inches.
To ensure stability at full extension, the table is fitted with an additional pair of center support legs, also mounted on casters. These auxiliary legs discreetly reinforce the table’s center span when the leaves are installed—an important structural feature often found in high-quality French extension tables of this scale.
The walnut surface displays a beautiful warm patina, enhanced by a traditional French polish finish that brings depth and luminosity to the natural grain. Subtle variations in tone and figure across the top add richness and reflect the authenticity and age of the wood.
When closed, the table presents as a refined oval dining table suited for more intimate gatherings; when fully extended, it transforms into an impressive banquet table capable of accommodating large dinner parties with ease.
Elegant in its simplicity and generous in scale, this piece exemplifies the enduring craftsmanship and timeless aesthetic of early 19th century French furniture making. -
