Description
A finely tuned balance between materials and geometry defines this rare console and mirror set, designed by Mario Sabot in collaboration with Willy Rizzo during the 1970s. The duo brought together a sharp Italian sensibility with the glamour of modernist Hollywood interiors.
Design
This console is a precise expression of 1970s luxury, where form meets bold surfaces. The structure combines polished aluminium, brushed brass detailing, and richly figured burl wood veneer. Each component holds its own yet supports the overall composition. The inset brass framing around the drawer front and tabletop lends visual rhythm and references Rizzo’s fascination with materials that reflect and absorb light differently. The circular recessed brass pull in the central drawer is a hallmark of the designer’s style: geometric, ornamental, but fully functional. A lower shelf, equally clad in burl veneer, offers both balance and utility.
The mirror follows suit in design, framed with the same burl veneer and bevelled glass, accentuated by a brass and chrome border. Together, the set speaks of deliberate contrast, gloss against grain, metal against wood, while maintaining a seamless architectural elegance. Mario Sabot, often celebrated for his adventurous cabinetry, here works with Rizzo’s distinct language of visual luxury and understated theatricality. The result is an ensemble equally suited to a refined entrance hall or a statement corner in a collector’s interior.
Condition
The condition is very good with minor wear consistent with age. There are small signs of oxidation on the brass and chrome surfaces. The wood veneer is intact and has developed a natural patina. -
