Monumental Neiman Marcus Green Italian Travertine and Brass Low Table

An extraordinary monumental green Italian travertine and brass low table originally created as a merchandise display platform for the historic Neiman Marcus flagship store in downtown Dallas, Texas.
Measuring approximately ten feet in length, the piece was conceived as part of the sophisticated architectural environment of the Neiman Marcus store rather than as conventional residential furniture. Particularly significant is the choice of stone: the richly figured green Italian travertine corresponds to the distinctive green stone used throughout the store's escalator surrounds and architectural wall panels, as illustrated in the accompanying photographs taken inside the downtown Dallas location.
The substantial top is composed of three beautifully matched sections of green travertine separated by narrow brass bands. The natural horizontal striations of the stone continue visually across the enormous surface, giving the table the appearance of a single monumental architectural element.
Supporting the top are four pairs of exceptionally sculptural solid brass feet. Each has a faceted, architectural form with inset panels and a beautifully aged original patina. Beneath the stone is a substantial steel framework that provides the necessary structural support while allowing the three sections of travertine to be removed for transportation and installation.
Originally used by Neiman Marcus as a display platform, the piece was later deaccessioned from the downtown store and subsequently installed in a significant Dallas residence. Its transition from commercial display fixture to residential furniture is particularly successful: at approximately ten feet long, it functions as an extraordinary cocktail or low table while retaining the scale and presence of an architectural installation.
The combination of monumental proportions, green Italian travertine and sculptural brass detailing embodies the luxurious, highly tailored modernism associated with the great American department-store interiors of the mid-20th century. Its restrained geometry also allows it to work equally well alongside important modernist furniture, contemporary art or in a more formal interior.
More than simply a large cocktail table, this is a surviving piece of the architectural and design history of Neiman Marcus and downtown Dallas, with exceptional scale, materials and provenance.
