Description
Maison Baguès Bronze Doré Palmier Tripartite Coffee Table with Églomisé Mirrored Glass
France, Circa 1950
There is an effortless elegance to Maison Baguès that transcends fashion, and this remarkable tripartite coffee table is a beautiful expression of the firm's enduring artistry. Conceived as three individual elements—a rectangular center flanked by two demi-lune tables—the composition offers both sculptural presence and remarkable versatility, allowing the pieces to be arranged together or separated as occasion demands.
The finely cast bronze doré frame is distinguished by Maison Baguès' coveted palmier motif, its gracefully textured legs and undulating apron lending the piece an organic refinement reminiscent of sunlit palm fronds. Each surface is inset with original hand-silvered églomisé mirrored glass, its softly mottled patina imparting the depth, character, and romance that only time can bestow. The subtle oxidation of the mirrored glass catches and diffuses light with extraordinary warmth, creating a luminous surface that is at once glamorous and quietly understated.
This table is in very good vintage condition, consistent with age and careful use. The gilt bronze frame retains a warm, beautifully aged patina with only light surface wear and minor rubbing to the gilding in areas, commensurate with age. The original églomisé mirrored glass exhibits the desirable foxing, silvering loss, and oxidation that are characteristic of authentic period églomisé, contributing to its rich decorative character rather than detracting from it. The three sections align and function properly, and the table is structurally sound, sturdy, and ready for use. Close-up photographs of the frame, glass, and any areas of wear are available upon request. Églomisé glass is hand-decorated mirrored glass, created by applying gold or silver leaf and painted details to the back of the glass. Its softly reflective surface adds depth, light, and an elegant sense of luxury that has been prized in fine French furnishings for centuries.
