Midcentury Bookmatched Walnut & Elm Cocktail Table with Zodiac Themed Marquetry

This stunning Mid-Century Modern cocktail table was realized in Italy, circa 1950. Offering exquisitely delicate and intricate marquetry, this piece displays the twelve zodiac characters around the perimeter of the tabletop. In the center of the circular top is a concentric spherical pattern consisting of alternating layers of European elm and bookmatched walnut. As one moves out towards the perimeter, this pattern gives way to a graphic starburst pattern in bookmatched elm. The zodiac characters, each encased within its own bubble, reside in the interstices between the star points. The edges of the tabletop are bookmatched walnut, while the perimeter is finished in channeled brass. The tabletop sits on tapered ebonized walnut legs. Simultaneously fun and sophisticated, this piece would be a winning addition to any style of interior from Classic Mid-Century Modern to contemporary. It has been newly restored to mint condition.
