Scandinavian Modern Dressing Table in Rosewood by Severin Hansen, 1950s

The rare desk or dressing table, model 65, designed by Severin Hansen and produced by Haslev Møbelsnedkeri in Denmark, is a refined example of Danish modern furniture design. Crafted in luxurious rosewood, this piece embodies the clean lines, precise detailing, and exceptional joinery that define Hansen’s work and the high standards of Danish cabinetmaking from the mid-20th century.

The rosewood used in this desk displays a dramatic, well-figured grain pattern, with rich, deep tones ranging from reddish-brown to nearly black, providing both depth and texture. The craftsmanship is evident in the seamless construction and the elegant silhouette, particularly in the sharply defined, beveled edges that frame the tabletop and drawer fronts. The legs are slim and tapered, meeting the corners with Hansen’s signature mitered joint technique—an architectural detail that showcases both structural integrity and minimalist sophistication.

Functionally, the piece is designed as both a desk and a dressing table. The central panel of the desktop lifts to reveal a foldable mirror and internal compartments suitable for storing personal items or writing materials. These discreet storage sections are carefully proportioned and smoothly finished, maintaining the exterior’s formal clarity. The concealed functionality enhances the versatility of the piece, making it suitable for both private and shared living spaces.

The underside bears the “Danish Furnituremakers Control” mark, a quality certification reserved for furniture that meets the rigorous standards of Danish design and craftsmanship. This designation confirms the piece’s authenticity and production pedigree.

The condition is excellent vintage, with only light surface wear and minor patina consistent with respectful use. The rosewood finish remains vibrant, and the mechanical components—such as the hinged mirror—function smoothly. All original parts are intact, preserving the integrity and historical value of the piece.

Severin Hansen Jr. was known for his commitment to refined proportion and structural clarity, and his collaborations with Haslev Møbelsnedkeri produced a series of timeless furniture forms. Model 65 is a particularly rare example, blending aesthetic restraint with thoughtful functionality in a compact, elegant format.
