Description
A rare example of a Warren McArthur library table/ writing table/ desk Style No. 1643 from 1939 in fine vintage condition.
(p.61 McArthur catalog published 1936) has the following caption beneath the catalog entry photo for a similar table
"Take an inventory of your old desk drawers. Funny, isn't it? Remember the roll top, pigeonhole treasuries which made way for unlittered tops. Filing cabinets did that. Here's the busy executive desk of the days to come.
Uncluttered, drawerless."
This table was purchased in 1939 by Lessing J. Rosenwald for the gallery wing of his home Alverthorpe Manor in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Rosenwald was Chairman of the Board with Sears, Roebuck and Co. from 1932-1939 at which time he left the world of retail having developed the catalog as a retail phenomena which became a part of the average American household significantly increasing the sales of Sears, Roebuck and Co. Upon his retirement he dedicated his life to the creation of one of the world's most significant collections of graphic art from medieval times to the present by an individual which as one of its founding benefactors he donated to the National Gallery of Art becoming the foremost donor of prints and drawings. Mr. Rosenwald holds a similar distinguished stature amongst the donors to the Library of Congress for his 2,653 item gift of illustrated books spanning the same five centuries.
The table/ desk remained in the Rosenwald family which accounts for its excellent vintage condition.
The wear to the Cafolite top and anodized aluminum base are minimal. -
