Josef Frank

Austrian, 1885 - 1967
Josef Frank was an Austrian-Swedish architect and designer, born on July 15, 1885, in Baden bei Wien, Austria, and passed away on January 8, 1967, in Stockholm, Sweden. He is known for his contributions to modernist design and his use of bright colors, bold patterns, and organic forms.

Frank studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology and began his career as an architect and designer in Vienna in the early 1900s. He was a member of the Wiener Werkstätte, a collective of artists and designers who sought to create beautiful, functional objects for everyday use. He later became a professor at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, where he taught architecture and design.

Frank's designs were characterized by their use of bold colors and patterns, as well as their organic forms and attention to detail. He created a range of furniture designs, including chairs, tables, and sofas, that were highly sought after for their unique style and craftsmanship. He also designed textiles, wallpaper, and other decorative objects, many of which featured his signature bright colors and patterns.

In 1933, Frank moved to Sweden to escape the rise of Nazism in Austria. There, he continued to work as an architect and designer, creating a range of buildings and interiors that reflected his modernist aesthetic. He also designed furniture for the Swedish furniture manufacturer Svenskt Tenn, including his famous "Svensk Fur" sofa.

Frank's work was highly influential in shaping modernist design, and his use of bold colors and patterns remains popular with designers today. Many of his designs are considered design classics and continue to be popular with design enthusiasts around the world.
