This large and important collage on board, “House Boats” by Jean Varda was created during the period that the artist lived on a house boat, in Sausalito, CA. It is framed in the artists hand made found wood frame. This large collage is signed Varda in the lower right corner. From his early life as a child prodigy in Greece, then time spent in Southern France in the 1920’s with the early modernist painters, through his time teaching at Black Mountain College and his years in California, Jean Varda has been the subject of many famous writers and even a film. He spent a lifetime pursuing his art and enjoying his avant-garde circle of friends. This is an unusually large collage byJean Varda.
