Matisse and American Art
February 5–June 18, 2017
Montclair Art Museum, 3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair, N.J.
For more information call 973.746.5555 or visit www.montclairartmuseum.org
This exhibition, the first to ever examine the French master Henri Matisse’s impact on the development of American modern art from 1907 to the present, will feature sixty-five paintings, archival objects, sculpture, prints and works on paper. Nineteen of these will be Matisse works, juxtaposed with forty-four works by American artists, such as Max Weber, Alfred Maurer, Maurice Prendergast, Stuart Davis, Robert Motherwell, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Romare Bearden, Sophie Matisse, Faith Ringgold, and Helen Frankenthaler. Matisse’s influence on these artists is conveyed through their adaption of his palette, pictorial structures, and subject matter. Matisse and American Art, which was five years in the making, is divided into different sections. One section showcases early 20th-century explorations of the nude, as another delves into Matisse’s theme of the window as a metaphor for the dialogue between the interior world of an artist and reality in the external world. Final sections explore his pervasive postwar impact on other artists, especially through bold, simplified profiles and vibrant cut-outs. Two complementary exhibitions are also on view at the MAM: Inspired by Matisse: Selected Works from the Collection and Janet Taylor Pickett: The Matisse Series.
