An Antique Gilt Wood Buddha Statue
-
Description
A delicately carved wood Buddha in an upright standing posture with a double Abhaya mudra. The statue displays a gilt surface with beautiful patina and some minor wear. The face was rendered with a serene expression with downcast eyes and a faint smile. The ushnisha on the head shows a lotus petals design with flames. The Buddha shows a very slender figure and a double abhaya mudra, which is almost exclusively found in the iconography of Theravada Buddhism in the Southeast Asian countries, Thailand and Laos. It is always associated with the upright images of the Buddha, either standing still with the feet joined, or walking.
Abhaya means fearlessness in Sanskrit. The mudra symbolizes protection, peace, and fearless.
The Buddha is displayed in a custom made wood stand. The statue itself measures 20.5 inches, 25.5 with the stand. -
