The return of Simon Vouet to France was considered by Louis Dimier in his History of Painting in France to be the turning point in the evolution of French art and the birth of a truly French school of painting and drawing throughout France’s regions.
Influences were felt from Flanders with Rubens, from Italy with Raffaello and Caravaggio, and Spain. Another influence was the 17th century exhibition of the Painters of Realism. An article in the Gazette Des Beaux-Arts by Charles Sterling in 1934 focused on Vignon.
Vignon was valet de chamber for King Henri IV and was at the scene when foreign paintings appeared in Paris. Vignon was protected by Louis XIII and Richelieu. Louis XIII was partial to realistic works and rid his rooms of all other paintings, leaving only these including Vignon’s. Vignon had direct contact with the Le Nain brothers of the Spanish (where he went twice).
He was received in the academy as professor in 1654. He was famous even before being received. It was said that he had fathered 34 child children, some of whom became painters. His works hang in many museums in France and Italy.
