Description
Very large and intact with fresh enameling, these tumblers with dove and floral decorations are painted with enamel colors and are fixed to the glass by a second firing in a muffle kiln. Glass was said to be invented in the Eastern Mediterranean or Mesopotamia as a glaze, circa 3500-3000 B.C. Enameling was perfected under Islamic rule in the 13th and 14th century, and with the Islamic influences in Spain remained a technique which the Spanish have employed until this day, and was especially celebrated in the 18th century.
