Description
French, late 19th Century
Height 75cm, diameter 50cm
This refined and elegant round side table, or gueridon, has a circular top of green veined marble. Running around the edge of the top of the table is a band of tole, which is mounted with ormolu in a repeating floral pattern. The table top is set on four ormolu legs, each of which is topped with a fluted column embellished with flowers. The central section of each leg is formed as a caryatid, and emerging from below the draped clothing of each caryatid is a tapered tole pillar, ornamented with ormolu arabesques, leading to undulating ormolu sections, and finishing in a tapered fluted column with onion feet. The four legs are joined by a curled and interlaced stretcher.
The table is designed in the manner of Adam Weisweiler (French, 1744-1820), a celebrated furniture maker of the 18th Century. This table has been attributed to Paul Sormani (French, 1817-1877), an Italian-born French furniture maker of the 19th Century. -
