Description
Circa 1895 original oil on board painting by the well known American marine artist, George Howell Gay. Signed lower right. In very good condition. Framed in a semi antique gold leaf Hudson River cove frame that is not original to the painting. Provenance: Arthur J. Nichols Gallery, New York City. Bill of sale from the gallery included with purchase. Overall framed measurements 8 by 15.5 inches.
George Howell Gay Born 1858 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Died 1931 in New York. Early in his painting career at the Academy of Design in Chicago, George Howell Gay studied under Paul Brown, a well-known marine artist, and Henry Elkins, the landscape painter. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Gay was a watercolorist known for his landscapes and marine scenes. -
