Description
Arden Riddle (1921-2011) high back lounge chair from one of America's leading post-war furniture craftsman.
The frame is made from solid black walnut handcrafted in his studio in 1988.
Branded AR and dated 1988.
The cushions have been re-upholstered in a faux Sherpa boucle and are in very good condition.
The profile of the lounge chair resembles Hans Wegner's classic GE 236 couch which Wegner designed in 1954.
For his back support instead of traditional turned wooden spindles Arden Riddle used metal coil springs cased in walnut colored vinyl tubing creating the illusion of wood with the comfort of a flexible spring back..
This use of vinyl covered springs in conjunction with black walnut is similar to Walter Lamb's use of vinyl clothes line with his marine bronze frames.
Classic standards, marine bronze tubing and black Walnut paired with a plastic product creating what has become a new classic pairing.
The chair is in excellent vintage condition. -
