"Goutte d'Eau" Signed Coffee Table in Bronze by Ado Chale

Early and rare “Goutte d’Eau” oval coffee table by Belgian artisan and designer Ado Chale, created in the late 1970s. This sculptural piece features a finely cast bronze tabletop resting on two sets of tripod black-lacquered metal bases. The table exemplifies Chale’s exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail, most notably in the richly textured bronze surface. “Goutte d’Eau” (drop of water) refers to the intricate abstract motif of the tabletop, evoking the serene form and movement of a water droplet. A self-taught craftsman, Chale drew significant inspiration from pre-Columbian culture during his extensive travels, influences that are subtly woven into his designs. The architectural quality of the metal base creates the impression that the tabletop floats, lending visual lightness to an otherwise substantial and grounded form.

Ado Chale (b. 1928) is a Belgian artist and designer who is known for his furniture designs which reference the natural world in both use of materials and form. In 1962 Chale opened his first gallery and was an active member of the Brussels avant-garde scene. In his gallery, Chale showcased jewelry from fellow artists as well as his own creations. Among others, Ado Chale is one of the key designers in Belgian postmodern design. His style was characterized by the use of gemstones as decorative element, references to natural elements and inspiration from his travels. “My designs have succeeded each other and have evolved over my discoveries, mostly in mineralogy, iron bronze and aluminum. Technical constraints have constantly pushed my development.” In recent years, we have seen a real rediscovery and appetite for Chale’s early creations.
