Description
Thonet's history goes back approximately two hundred years and is best known for its wood bending technique. This technique created the characteristic bentwood chairs that were widespread in Vienna's cafés and restaurants around 1890. In the 1930s they produced innovative designs by avant-garde architects such as Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier.
Design
This set of six dining room chairs were produced in the 1980s and strongly shows traits of the designs by the Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. This concerns two chairs with armrests and four without. The frames are made of black lacquered wood and assembled to a high quality. Its upholstery has a typical Art Deco motif with rich shapes and is colored with soft gold and ivory tones. A striking detail is a single rectangular recess at the top of the backrest for the chairs without armrests and a double rectangular recess for the two with armrests. The chairs are clearly marked 'Thonet'.
Condition
This set is in good condition with only minimal signs of usage. - More Information
