Description
By the 1950s, Finland had established itself as a force for innovation in design. The best qualities of Finnish light fixtures are their atmospheric light and disciplined, functionalist design that is not short of unique decorative elements.
This model is all about its brass structure and unique shape. It combines a classical shape with carefully thought out proportions, and Finnish craftsmanship. The circular elements - cut by straight lines and angles - define this model, evidenced by the slender brass body standing on the round base, lending an understated look that allows the lampshade and the angular neck holding it to remain the design’s focus. The choice of brass not only reflects the durability emphasised in Finnish craftsmanship, but also contributes to the lamp’s warm, inviting glow. This lamp also features a subtle decorative element, a spiral decoration that connects the stem to the base of the lamp. This spiral decoration is reminiscent of Finnish designer Paavo Tynell’s work, as is the angular shape of the body. It can therefore be said that the maker of this lamp drew inspiration from Tynell, known as the man who illuminated Finland. He is considered to be one of the best-known Finnish lighting designers, and his work has had a great influence on modern lighting design, as we can see with the execution of this lamp.
The warm elegance and the “form follows function” ethos inherent in Finnish design is upheld, as well as high-quality craftsmanship. This floor lamp becomes more and more charming with each moment spent on discovering its features, making it an ideal accent piece. Often, many people begin thinking about the overhead lighting and how it will serve the space - however, it's the freestanding lighting that plays the most pivotal role in getting it “just right”. This floor lamp is a truly timeless piece that would make a lovely addition to any interior.
