Description
Finnish designers, deservedly referred to as the masters of Nordic lighting, were true pioneers of atmospheric glows and disciplined, functionalist models that were not short of subtle decorative elements. Works from the mid-century period are some of the most coveted collectors items, as this era marked the birth of some of Finland’s most iconic designs.
This stunning mid-20th century chandelier was made at the esteemed company, Idman Oy. Established in 1936 in Turku, Finland, Idman Oy was renowned for its exceptional metalwork and craftsmanship, and this chandelier is a true testament to that reputation. Crafted from brass, this chandelier features a beautiful construction that has been expertly designed to showcase the five opaline glass shades and the curved arms in a multilayered cluster. The upward-facing glass shades are placed at the end of the five arms and have a milky appearance that diffuses the light beautifully, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in any room. In addition, the shades resemble vases allowing the light to further transform the room whilst adding a sculptural dimension. The general shape remains quite traditional, with upward facing light bulbs and multiple arms, arranged symmetrically. The lamp features five additional dainty brass elements resembling abstract petals. From beneath, thanks to these details, the chandelier takes the shape of a flower reminiscent of the works of Paavo Tynell and Mauri Almari. The patina of the polished brass adds further charm and character.
This chandelier is a perfect way to add Nordic elegance to any interior. The balance between functionality and aesthetics reflects a commitment to both form and function, an ethos deeply ingrained in Finnish design philosophy. The chandelier acts at the same time as a functional piece and also as a work of art. Its expert craftsmanship and unique character make it a timeless evidence of the golden age of mid-century Finnish lighting design.
